The EU is eager to sign a co-operation agreement with Libya on trade, human rights and illegal migration, Reuters said on Wednesday (October 10th). EU Justice and Security Commissioner Franco Frattini confirmed the initiative, adding the accord should also spread to areas like energy, tourism and archaeological sites. The agreement is to be tabled for approval at a summit of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg on October 15th.
Also on Wednesday, Valentina Siropulo, one of the six Bulgarian medics who spent 8 years in Libyan jails on charges of deliberately infecting children with HIV, said the EU should maintain ties with Libya. Siropulo and the five other medics were invited to visit the European Parliament on the world day against the death penalty. Siropulo said the medics would not seek compensations from Libya. "There can be no compensation for our sufferings in Libya. We could only accept material and moral support from people who understand us, and not from those who are responsible for these sufferings," she said
