In an effort to jump on the worldwide ‘green' bandwagon, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's architect son, Saif al-Islam, has launched an ambitious plan to increase eco-tourism in Libya by developing the first energy-efficient buildings in the country.
Unlike neighbours Egypt and Tunisia, because of its isolationist past, Libya has never experienced the economic benefits-or ecological detriments-that go hand-in-hand with a booming tourism industry. Al-Islam's Green Mountain Project situated along the Mediterranean coast, reportedly has architects-in particular, Foster + Partners, who were approached about Green Mountain in 2004-eager to put their ecological stamp on the country's burgeoning architecture developements. |
