A look at the area that would be protected under the Green Mountain Conservation and Development Authority, announced Monday by Moammar Gadhafi's son:
_ Size: 2,046 square miles in northeastern Libya, an area known as the Green Mountain.
_ Mediterranean coastline: 136 miles long.
_ Agriculture: The fertile region produces dates, apples, barley and honey.
_ Ancient ruins: In 1982, UNESCO named Cyrene a World Heritage Site. The ancient city was developed by the Greeks in 631 B.C, and within 200 years, four more Greek cities were established in the region. The Romans later created a province here in 74 B.C. Cyrene was destroyed by an earthquake in 365.
_ Ruins still standing: Temple of Zeus, which was constructed in the 5th century B.C.; Sanctuary of Apollo, one of the earliest temples with foundations dating back to 6th century B.C.; and the Gymnasium, built by the Greeks in the 2nd century B.C. and later converted by the Romans into a forum.
