TRIPOLI -- Libya is planning to privatize its mobile phone sector next week as part of a program of wider economic reforms, the son of Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi said Thursday.
"The two mobile phone companies, Al Madar and Libyana, will go private as of Tuesday," Seif Al Islam said during the inauguration of a national council for economic development.
State-owned Libyana and Al Madar have around 2.3 million users out of a population of 6 million inhabitants.
Oil-rich Libya has undergone a dramatic diplomatic reversal since agreeing to stop developing weapons of mass destruction and denouncing terrorism, and with its newly opened economy is gradually returning to the international fold.
