Founders of the One Laptop per Child nonprofit group announced today that the first 1,000 laptops have rolled off the assembly line. The faculty members of the MIT Media Lab that designed these laptops wanted to show that laptops could be made and built for $100.
The challenge now, according to Walter Bender, president of software and content of the organization, is to fine-tune the laptop to fit the needs of children's learning. Stress tests on the laptops will begin soon and will include drops from various heights and poundings on the keyboards by children.
As long as everything goes according to plan, the next batch of laptops to be manufactured will be sent to schools in Argentina, Brazil, Nigeria, Libya, and Thailand.
