Port Moody Library is hosting local photographer Glen Stedham for a trip to Libya and the Sahara Desert next Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Stretching from the Mediterranean to the Sahara, Libya presents travellers with a wealth of possibilities. Participants in the Nov. 8 program will visit with the shepherds who travel by camel and foot through the desert and meet more of the fascinating people and animals in a place full of surprises.

Libya is now opening its doors to western investment and tourism. Stedham and his and wife were among the first westerners to enter Libya in early 2005. The trip gave them the opportunity to visit amazing places seldom seen by westerners. The novelty of their presence was obvious: The Stedhams were constantly being greeted on the street, shopkeepers were hospitable with offers of lunch and discounts on purchases.

Stedham has always sought out wild, seldom visited places. Canoeing, kayaking and backpacking expeditions have taken him throughout western North America from Alaska to Mexico. He has also trekked the Himalayan Mountains, across the width of England and into the Andes along the Inca Trail. In recent years, the Stedhams have embraced adventure travel. The spirit, however, is the same: to visit places away from the main tourist track – places such as Libya and the Sahara.
