Tripoli - The African Telecommunications Union (ATU) on Sunday started a series of meetings in Libya devoted to the formulation of a four-year telecommunications development plan for Africa.
The meetings taking place in the Libyan capital from July 9-17 include a special session of the ATU board of directors (9-11 July), a preliminary committee of the ministerial conference (12- 15 July) and the 2nd conference of ministers (16-17 July).
The co-ordinator of the meetings, Kwami Mensah, said that the special session of the organisation's board of directors would examine the union's strategic plan for the 2006-2010 period essentially devoted to the development of telecommunications on the African continent. It would also examine the secretary-general's activity report for the previous year.
According to Mensah, the council would also look into the joint African proposals prepared by the ATU in Nairobi, Kenya last June to be finalised and submitted to the meetings taking place in Turkey in November as Africa's positions to defend the interests of the continent.
The proposals would be submitted for approval to the conference of ministers, he added.
Established in Addis Ababa in 1977 as a specialised agency of the former Organisation for African Unity (OAU), the forerunner of the African Union (AU), the ATU was based in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
As a result of the crisis that occurred in DRC in the last few years, Kenya accepted to provisionally host the Union since 1997.
The organisation has 46 African member countries. -panapress
